Students, grades 1-5, have been hard at work creating a collaborative artwork inspired by the artist Frida Kahlo for our upcoming Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Friday October 14th, 2016, 6:30-8:30 pm, at the Round Lake Beach Civic Center. We are learning about Frida Kahlo, her courage, confidence, and engagement with nature in her native country of Mexico. We recreated her garden and also explored our identity and symbols with drawings of our hands that have been transformed into a flower, hummingbird, and butterfly. In Frida's World by Maria Gabriela Brito, students learned how Frida was inspired by her artist father and the natural world, how she overcame a terrible accident, her strong and joyous personality and love of children, her determination to live life to the fullest.

"Feet what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?" Frida Kahlo

Welcome to Art at W.J. Murphy Elementary! Go Mustangs!

My name is Michelle Turek and I am the art teacher here at Murphy. This is my 10th year teaching in RLAS #116. I am so excited about the upcoming school year and getting to know you!

The art classroom is an exciting place where students are to learn, grow, discuss, imagine, invent, experiment, and to be themselves.

We are a community of learners! I love watching students challenge themselves and set new goals each day. They can be leaders and express themselves in creative ways, making innovative connections between other academic subjects. I enjoy observing and guiding students in experimenting with a large variety of media and discovering their individual creative strengths and challenges.

I received my bachelor's and master's of science degrees in Art Education from Northern Illinois University. I also have a degree in Illustration from The American Academy of Art Chicago. I love learning about all different styles and forms of art. I really love photography, museums, drawing, painting, printmaking, and digital technology!
